How I Prepare for a Family Photography Session: Behind the Lens with a Stockton Family Photographer

As a Stockton family photographer, capturing authentic moments and creating timeless memories is at the heart of what I do. Behind every beautiful family photo you see is a lot of careful preparation that ensures everything goes smoothly and everyone feels comfortable. Here’s a glimpse into how I prepare for a family photography session and why these steps are so important to my process as a lifestyle family photographer.

How I Prepare For Family Photography Sessions

1. Getting My Gear Ready

First and foremost, I make sure all of my photography gear is prepped and in top shape. This means charging batteries, formatting memory cards, cleaning lenses, and packing backups of everything. Nothing is worse than having an SD card fill up in the middle of a session and having to change it mid-shot, so having my gear ready helps me stay focused on what truly matters—capturing the magic of your family. For me, reliability is key, and this prep ensures I’m not worrying about equipment during the shoot.

2. Packing the Essentials (Including Gummy Bears!)

Believe it or not, a little bag of gummy bears has saved more than a few sessions! I always pack a treat, especially when working with younger children. Gummy bears are a fan favorite and can be a great reward to keep kids motivated, happy, and engaged. It helps create a fun and relaxed atmosphere where kids feel comfortable, and parents can focus on enjoying the session rather than managing a potential meltdown.

3. Reviewing Questionnaires

Before each session, I take the time to review the pre-session questionnaires I send to families. These are filled with helpful information about each family member’s name, age, dynamics, preferences, interests, and anything important I should be aware of before the session. Understanding a family’s style and expectations is crucial to providing a personalized experience. Whether it’s capturing candid moments, playful interactions, or traditional portraits, having this information helps me tailor the session to each family’s unique personality and needs.

4. Completing My Posing Ideas Worksheets

Posing might seem like a small detail, but it’s actually one of the most important aspects of a family photography session. I spend time working through my session posing ideas worksheet for each family, where I jot down specific poses or prompts that I think will resonate with them. Since I specialize in lifestyle photography, I like to keep things natural and fluid—giving families prompts that spark real interactions and authentic moments rather than stiff, posed shots. However, having a plan for various poses ensures that we have plenty of options and a good flow throughout the shoot.

5. Planning Ahead for Driving Time

Living and working in Stockton means navigating various locations for shoots, whether it’s a park, the family’s home, or a scenic outdoor spot. I always plan my driving route in advance, leaving extra time for traffic or unexpected delays. This is so important because I want to arrive relaxed and ready, not rushing or flustered. It also ensures that I can be at the location ahead of time, so I can scout lighting and scenery.

6. Arriving Early to Scout the Location

One of the most important things I do before any session is arrive early to the location. This allows me to scout the area for the best lighting, backgrounds, and spots that fit the family’s vision. Arriving early also gives me time to plan out the session flow, envisioning how we’ll move from one spot to another and where key moments will happen. There have been plenty of times that weather or construction at locations I have used often have changed the scenery, so arriving early allows me to visualize and make adjustments based on changes.

Why These Preparations Are Important

Each of these steps plays a vital role in ensuring that the session runs smoothly and that the family has an enjoyable, stress-free experience. When my gear is ready, I’m confident. When I have treats packed, I know I can keep the energy positive. Reviewing questionnaires and posing ideas helps me connect with families on a deeper level, making the session feel personal. Planning ahead for time and location ensures that we’re not missing out on any magical moments due to poor logistics. I know I cannot control everything that occurs during the session, (and that’s the beauty I treasure!), but I want to ensure I can do everything I can to come prepared and ready.

At the end of the day, being prepared allows me to focus on what really matters—capturing the love, joy, and connection that makes each family unique. As your Stockton lifestyle family photographer, my goal is to create beautiful, genuine images that tell your family’s story.

By taking these extra steps, I ensure that each family photography session is relaxed, fun, and full of joy. These preparations, combined with a love for what I do, make every session so very special and unique to you.
